Court Law and Disputes Resolution
Our court law and dispute resolution team aim to resolve disputes for our clients on the most advantageous and cost-effective terms. Jeremy Glasgow, a trained mediator, is available to mediate between parties who are not clients. We also instruct leading counsel for specialised major cases and act as solicitors in a supporting role.

Civil
Tim Harley and Jeremy Glasgow can handle any problems you may have. They will advise you on the best way to achieve the result you want. The New Zealand legal system solves disputes in the following way:
  1. mediation is explored as this is the most cost effective and fast means of resolving a dispute to everyone's satisfaction.
  2. arbitration by a private arbitrator may be considered. Arbitration avoids the delays and publicity of the public court system.
  3. a case may be filed in either the Disputes Tribunal, the District Court or the High Court (see sidebar), all of which service the Nelson area. An appeal on limited grounds is available to a higher court.

Criminal
Jeremy Glasgow is an approved Youth Advocate and acts for children (less than 17 years of age) in criminal matters. This is by Court appointment. He is also Deputy District Inspector of Mental Health for Nelson-Marlborough.

Which Court?
Depending on the amount of money involved, you may take your case to the Disputes Tribunal, the District Court or the High Court. The Disputes Tribunal is a useful and informal procedure for small cases where the parties are in dispute over sums up to $7500 (or $13,000 if both sides agree). Undisputed debts cannot be sued for. The District Court handles 95% of claims including all debt collection claims. The High Court handles fewer cases but they are the most serious and involve the greatest monetary amounts (over $200,000).
